There’s a world of opportunities for those who know where to look. To get you started, Hyperallergic has launched this monthly resource for artists and creatives eager to get their work out there and challenge themselves to create something new.
- Apply for the Arts Writers grant, which supports emerging and established contemporary art writers to “support projects addressing both general and specialized art audiences, from scholarly studies to self-published blogs” with grants ranging from $15,000 to $50,000. Applications, which are categorized by articles, blogs, books, or short-form writing, are due May 20. [Arts Writers]
- The Ellies, Miami’s visual arts awards presented by Oolite Arts, is offering $500,000 in funding to Miami-Dade’s visual artists and art teachers. The program provides grants ranging from $2,500 to $25,000 for new works, and $5,000 travel grants for K-12 art teachers. One artist will receive the Michael Richards Award, an unrestricted $75,000 award and commission from Oolite Arts in collaboration with the Bass, Miami Beach’s contemporary art museum. - Artists are invited to apply for the NYC Health + Hospitals Community Murals Project to create health-themed murals inside of NYC’s hospitals. The project says: “The aim of the program is to use a collaborative mural making process as a tool to build trust and engagement between the hospitals and their communities, build neighborhood pride, and reduce the stigma associated with hospitals through community-building activities.” Applications close May 17. - The band OK Go is inviting student artists to submit proposals for art proposals to ship into space. Applications are due May 6. [OK Go]
- Panorama, a peer-reviewed, open-access online journal dedicated to American art and visual culture in all media, has launched a call for submissions. [Art Historians Association of America]
- The 2019-2020 program cycle of Queer|Art|Mentorship forges new relationships between early-career and established LGBTQ+ artists and curators by partnering mentors with a mentee in their field. To receive an application, one must submit an intention to apply via email before May 30. Official applications open on May 12 and close July 18. [Q|A|M]
- Applications are open for the Work in Progress (WIP) residency for textile artists and designers. WIP says “residents have access to a studio in TAC Manhattan’s store-front window for one month and (re)create an active studio of their work.” The program encourages “artists to use the space as a working studio, displaying tools, materials and their artwork in various stages of progress.” Applications are due May 6. There is still time to apply for two opportunities that appeared in April’s “Opportunities for Artists”:
- A.I.R. Gallery invites artists to donate a postcard-sized work (6×4 inches) in any medium relating to the theme of immigrant rights and advocacy for its annual postcard show. Each work is sold for $45 and all proceeds go to benefit A.I.R. Gallery programs. Entry is free and all works are accepted. Work details should be submitted online, and then shipped or dropped off at A.I.R. Gallery by May 15.
- The Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art is accepting applications for its queer theater and performance residency. Selected artists will receive an honorarium and free rehearsal space, and will present a work-in-progress showcase at the museum at the end of the residency. Residents will also have the opportunity to stage their project at La MaMa experimental theatre club. The residency is curated by Hyperallergic writer Zachary Small and Leslie-Lohman assistant curator Daniel J Sander. Applications are due May 3. [Leslie-Lohman]
